Nicholas Perna, Ph.D., Economic Advisor to Webster Financial Corporation
B.2  THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF CONTRACTS WITH THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Sara Goldsmith Schwartz, Managing Partner, Schwartz Hannum PC
This interactive session will provide trustees with an overview of the Head of School contract process — both initial and renewal contracts. We will outline the key terms to include in Head of School contracts, address rebuttable presumption obligations, and also review the current trends in benefits being provided to Heads. Real world examples of legal disputes between schools and Heads will be discussed and used s learning opportunities. Attendees will be provided with checklists of issues to address in Head of School contracts, as well as in contracts with search firms.
B.3  THE BOARD'S ROLE IN DEVELOPMENT
Tim Hogen, Development Consultant, Hogen Associates
What should every independent school board do to set strategy for, oversee, support, and (at times) execute the school's institutional advancement activities which we lump together as "Development"? What should a competent board NOT do? What must each trustee know, and do as an individual, to fulfill her / his responsibility for development? This seminar-type session is aimed both at trustees who serve on Development committees, and all others who would like to learn more about how boards can govern effectively in this area.
B.4  CASE STUDIES IN SCHOOL GOVERNANCE
Douglas Lyons, Executive Director, Connecticut Association of Independent Schools
Experience can be the best teacher, though the cost can be significant. Case studies enable board members to benefit from the experience of others. In this interactive session, participants will grapple with a series of real, albeit fictionalized issues that have challenged independent school boards.

B.5  WORKING SMART
Paul Horovitz, Head, Litchfield Montessori School; (Retired) Head of School at Antilles School, St. Thomas, VI and The Buckley School in Los Angeles
Many boards and administrators expend great energy in thinking smart and strategically, but if we are to be effective, working smart is just as important.  This session will look at the actual workings of the board and offer practical ways to make the best use of trustee and staff time, through the use of annual agendas, decision paths, and more effective meetings and committees.
B.6  WOMEN AND LEADERSHIP IN INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS
Devereaux McClatchey, President, Carney Sandoe & Associates
d While women represent over 65% of the teaching population in this country, they remain grossly underrepresented in executive and leadership roles nation-wide. This statistic plays out within independent schools as well. Increasingly, Boards and trustees have sought to address this imbalance by recruiting women into more leadership positions, but the pace of change has been frustratingly slow. In this session, Devereaux McClatchey shares insights about effective tactics and strategies in recruiting talented female leaders. Discussion will also focus on career-planning tips for women seeking Independent School leadership positions.
