This hands-on class will focus on networking
in a Microsoft environment for school IT
professionals. This year we will focus on security
- looking at the security features of the Microsoft
software as well as 3rd party appliances and
software. Time will also be devoted to wireless
security. Below is a rough breakdown of the
week.
Monday [10:15-4:00]: We will
examine issues surrounding the installation or
upgrade to Windows 2000/2003 and Active Directory.
We will touch on safe migration plans, as well as
how to restore old configurations. Additionally, we
will examine important DNS and TCP/IP issues.
Finally, we will work briefly with users and
groups.
Tuesday [9:00-3:00]: We will
examine some of the useful technologies that are
included with Windows &endash; in particular,
terminal services and IIS. We will also spend time
learning to use group policies for controlling
desktops, deploying software, and securing your
environment.
Wednesday [9:00-3:00]: Security:
We will look at NTFS, share security, TCP/IP
concepts, and firewall/proxy concepts. We will also
spend time on wireless security including 802.1x
and the use of IAS (Microsoft's built-in RADIUS
server).
Thursday [9:00-3:00]: Security:
We will introduce freeware tools that can be used
for security (like Nmap, Ethereal, Snort). We will
introduce sniffing and scanning a network. We will
briefly talk about how hackers may attack your
network and some of the countermeasures that can be
deployed.
Friday [9:00-11:45]: Security: we
will continue with security and administration
topics and look at ISA server (Microsoft's firewall
product). As time permits, we will examine various
network security devices and software including
posture checking appliances, interior firewalls,
and log analysis tools.
