This course goes beyond the point-and-click
basics of Mac OS X, delving into the features that
allow you to run a large network and manage
multiple machines. We'll cover some of the more
complex features of Mac OS X in detail, and even
venture into the open-source world to examine some
3rd party applications.
We'll work with both the client and server
versions of Mac OS X, including version 10.5
(assuming an on-time release). A basic level of
system administration skill is assumed, and
participants must have experience with the
installation and use of Mac OS X client.
Given the unknown timing of 10.5's release, the
exact list of topics won't be set until later in
the spring. The categories below show the possible
topics we may cover. As we won't have time to
explore every one of these topics, participants are
urged to vote for those which interest them
most.
Directory Services
Open Directory/LDAP, Windows domains, network
home directories, and Active Directory
integration.
System Prep
Locking down machines, network booting, network
installs, and system imaging ("ghosting").
UNIX Foundations
Permissions, access control lists, command-line
administration, batch scripting, and scheduled job
execution (cron and launchd).
Common Network Services
rsync, SSH tunnels and authentication,
firewalls, VPN, IP failover, DNS, DHCP, mail, and
certificate management.
10.5 (Leopard)
Changes from 10.4, iCal server, and others
TBA.
